IT IS HERE. IT HAS FINALLY HAPPENED. BLACKPINK HAS RELEASED MORE MUSIC!! Well, they were featured on a new track, but BLINKS will take what we can get.
BUT!!!! BEFORE I BEGIN TALKING ABOUT THE TRACK, I want to say that I have much respect for the BLINKs that tried to organize fans to stop trending "Sour Candy" and focus on the #BlackLivesMatter movement and everything surrounding George Floyd. Getting new releases to trend is a big goal for many fandoms, and I'm glad that BLINKs were focusing on injustices, inequality, and police brutality in our country rather than getting a new release to trend. I know other fandoms tried to shift focus (i.e. NCTzens with "Punch"'s first win, and ARMYs with BTS' 2020 celebration), and I am thankful that fandoms and people are uniting to fight against the blatant racism and poor treatment of POCs and black communities in America. This is CLEARLY a very new blog, and pretty much everyone reading is my friend right now, but it's still important to acknowledge the big societal issues of today. Now, on with the review!
BLACKPINK's new feature is on Lady Gaga's latest single, "Sour Candy." The pop-house song is a welcome new sound from both artists. While Lady Gaga and BLACKPINK have both had tracks with electronic influences (see: BLACKPINK's "Boombayah", Lady Gaga's "Stupid Love"), this one is particularly EDM-sounding, considering the fact that the whole song is built on a house beat.
The song is arranged in a way that compliments each woman's voice. The intro and first verse emphasize a more sultry tone in each of the YG girls' voices. Lady Gaga picks up the refrain and post-chorus with her lower, slightly huskier voice, giving the dance/club track an enticing push forward. The spoken/rap verse from Gaga gives another unexpected change before BLACKPINK comes in again for the chorus. It's a well-rounded song that highlights each voice well. I do wish Lisa had more lines, and but otherwise, it's a decent balance between the artists.
The song has a pretty good message too, about owning all your own insecurities and past damage. Gaga's lines, "I'm hard on the outside, but if you give me time, then I could make time for your love" and "I might be messed up, but I know what's love" all show that a hard exterior is a way of protecting yourself and finding the ones that actually care.
The song's sound is reminiscent of Katy Perry's "Swish Swish," which I'm sure others have already picked up on. While I doubt Perry's song was copied, I do know that house beats can sound similar, and the bouncing electronic sound that plays a melody under the song is a similar to the one used in the "Swish Swish," but I think the melodies themselves are different as well.
Overall, I enjoyed the song. I love hearing new BLACKPINK music any chance I get, and if there weren't a lock down or pandemic happening right now, I'm pretty sure this would be played in clubs in some way. It has a nice summer club music vibe, and it might be my new shower song.
